Care

At its heart, our key task is to help create a safe, nurturing, supportive and healing home for the young people in our care. We love to see how our young people thrive when they experience genuine warmth, acceptance, understanding and a place to put down roots.

Our vision for care

Common Thread offers exceptional, therapeutic and innovative care, tailored to the needs and unlimited potential of every member of our community.

We nurture and support the healing and empowerment of young people hurt by trauma, abuse and neglect. We do this by creating loving, family-sized homes, often set in beautiful, rural environments. We fill these homes with acts of kindness, with words and deeds of encouragement and support and with unconditional love and understanding.

Our intention is to create a safe and loving family home where young people can learn to trust and hope again. And to celebrate as they start to achieve positive change and rebuild their young lives.

Our model

At Common Thread we put the welfare of the young person at the centre of our model. We create a clear, individual, personal plan for each young person – an essential foundation from which they can start to rebuild their life and achieve positive change.

Our model provides our young people with great parenting in an environment which is nurturing and therapeutic. We create a space where they can experience a sense of belonging and safety – so important for healing and long-term wellbeing.

A family home

At Common Thread, we aim to offer the very best experience of childhood to our young people.

Getting the environment right – and free from even the slightest hint of institution – is a key component of our work. Our small family-sized homes are carefully designed to closely resemble the very best of positive family living. They offer a sense of deep nurture, stability, comfort and support.

As with most families, our young people get involved in lots of social and recreational activities and trips. They also engage in the ‘normal’, daily routine of family life – those small but important tasks that create stability and offer opportunities to build and deepen relationships with staff and peers.

Therapeutic practice

We create a healing environment filled with acceptance, tolerance, understanding and hope – and a lot of play, fun and creativity too. Our practice helps us build a therapeutic community for both our young people and our staff, where every member can find a sense of belonging and the opportunity to thrive.

Supporting our teams

We know we can only create a nurturing and healing environment for our young people by having a strong and properly supported team to care for them.

We aim to create a therapeutic community where team members can grow and develop as practitioners and as people. We do this by offering:

  • an extensive induction and ongoing training programme, including regular in-house training from a range of specialists
  • routine professional debriefing and support and supervision – giving our team members a chance to reflect on and improve their practice
  • great shift patterns where team members work just 10 days out of every 28 days on a full wage, so they get good life/work balance and a chance to decompress after a 48-hour shift

Medium & Long term care

Our services are aimed at children and young people with the most profound emotional difficulties whose needs can’t be met within a family placement. In our experience, these young people require a prolonged period of intensive therapeutic support to help them heal and thrive.

Our team of highly experienced and skilled staff provide 24/7 care and support to our young people. More than just carers, they become a friendly, familiar and trusted person in the lives of our young people.

Short term intervention

Common Thread can offer specialist round the clock care for children who are subject to care orders and are experiencing a placement breakdown or are in need of respite. Staff are available for referrals 24 hours a day and will provide escort when necessary.

We are able to take children and young people at short notice, keeping them safe and meeting their needs until a suitable long-term placement can be found.

Our homes

Our homes have been chosen because they offer a secure, family-sized space in a beautiful, healing natural environment. They are designed to provide an experience which closely resembles the best model of family living – providing support, connection and a deep sense of belonging.
